Google’s search results are often a case of quantity over quality – you’ll receive thousands of hits in a few milliseconds, and then proceed to click on the top two or three in the list
– and this applies to images too. However, Google has plenty of tricks to help you narrow down your search results, including Search Tools. To access these, perform a normal image search and then select the Search Tools
button that appears beneath the search bar, and just to the right of the More option inside the toolbar. Google will then respond by adding a new row of options above your image results…
FILTER BY SIZE
You can filter you results based on set sizes, or select Exactly and enter your own. If you have a minimum size but no upper limit, select ‘Larger than…’ .
FILTER BY COLOUR
You can opt to only view images that are ‘Full colour’ or ‘Black and white.’ Or, select a colour from the palette to view images that heavily feature that particular colour.
TYPE & TIME
Filter images based on whether they’re clip art, drawings etc using Type. Alternatively, use Time to locate images uploaded within a certain time range.
SEARCH BY IMAGE
Limited options are available for Search by Image, most notably Time. When you opt to view Visually Similar images, you’ll get access to the full Search Tools options.
